1972 Chrysler Town & Country Wagon

Chrysler’s Town & Country was the most luxurious and expensive wagon on the market, featuring modern amenities like plush interior and exterior trim, air conditioning, power seats, electric windows, air suspension and third row seating. With it’s high price, only 14,116 nine passenger Chrysler wagons were produced for the ‘72 model year. As built this car is 1 of 1, with it’s unique custom ordered features and John Lennon’s thoroughly documented ownership history.

Lennon’s car was special ordered with Amber Sherwood Metallic paint, faux wood trim delete, and a 6.6 liter 400 cubic inch Holley 2-barrel carbureted V8 producing 190 HP and 310 ft-lbs of torque. The engine is mated to a TorqueFlite 3-speed automatic transmission, burning fuel at a rate of 11 MPG.

John liked to sit in the back, listening to music played out of a custom 8-track system with stereo speakers installed into the backs of the front seats. This allowed one of his assistants, who were often the ones behind the wheel, to select an alternate program on the wagon’s factory installed in-dash AM/FM radio.

The tailgate was designed with a dual-role, it could fold down flat or swing out like a door. The air deflector that arcs over the top wasn’t for aerodynamic reasons, but to prevent a vacuum forming behind the car which would have sucked exhaust fumes into the passenger compartment when the rear window was lowered.

Chrysler billed this model with it’s Torsion-Quiet Ride system as “the quietest, smoothest riding wagon in the industry”. Unbelievably the Town & Country is over 19 feet long, over 6 feet wide and weighs 4735 pounds.
